Auditor Galloway releases audit of Stoddard County government; county receives rating of fair

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo (March 1, 2018) Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway today released a regularly-scheduled audit of the government of Stoddard County, located in southeast Missouri. The audit received an overall rating of fair.

"This audit contains several recommendations for Stoddard County officials to implement so they can better serve county residents," Auditor Galloway said. "I urge those officials look at ways they can improve fiscal controls and procedures in place."

Among the findings of the audit:

  • County officials need to improve financial reporting and properly approve the tax rate for the Stoddard County Sheltered Facilities Board (SCSFB). The SCSFB did not bid the construction of an office building nor ensure compliance with prevailing wage laws on the project.
  • Controls and procedures over the property tax system need improvement.
  • The sheriff did not solicit proposals or document the reasons for selecting the jail commissary services vendor.
  • County electronic records are not adequately protected.
  • A transfer from the tax maintenance fund was not in compliance with uses allowed by state law.
