Statement from Auditor Galloway on Sen. McCaskill's call for federal investigation into hospital billing schemes

State audit of Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville found $90 million in questionable lab billings for patients from around the U.S.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (May 24, 2018) State Auditor Nicole Galloway today released the following statement regarding U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill's call for a federal investigation into hospital billing schemes, following an audit by Galloway of Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville that uncovered a $90 million billing scheme:

I appreciate Sen. McCaskill bringing Congressional scrutiny to this national problem that my audit uncovered last summer. It has become clear that these billing schemes extend well beyond Putnam County Memorial Hospital, and impact health care costs for all of us.

I will continue to get to the bottom of this matter to protect Missouri taxpayers, and my office will work with Sen. McCaskill and others in federal government to aid their investigation.

All of this began with our audit of a small county in northern Missouri. Once again, it demonstrates that my audits get results.
