Galloway announces audits of City of Sparta and Sparta Municipal Court

06/19/2015

City audit requested by citizens through petition process

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has announced upcoming audits of the City of Sparta and the 38th Judicial Circuit - City of Sparta Municipal Division.

"The residents of Sparta deserve an effective government, and that includes both city government and the municipal court system," Galloway said. "Sparta citizens have requested a thorough review of city operations and I look forward to reporting audit results."

City audits may be initiated through a petition process or by request of the governor. The City of Sparta audit was initiated through the petition process, which allows citizens to request an audit of their local government by submitting the required number of registered voter signatures. For the City of Sparta audit, 200 valid signatures were required. Petitioners submitted 452 signatures and 225 of those were verified as valid by the county clerk.

In order to maximize efficiency, auditors will also review the municipal court. The most recent audit of the 38th Judicial Circuit in Sparta was released in December 2011. A copy of that report is online here. The court audit will be released separately from the city audit.

Individuals who would like to provide information for consideration during the audits may contact the State Auditor's Office at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov or 800-347-8597.
