Auditor Galloway releases audits of Gentry County government and circuit court

County cash reserves total twice yearly operating expenses

09/19/2017

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has released an audit of the government of Gentry County in northwest Missouri. Auditor Galloway also released an audit of Gentry County Circuit Court. The county and the circuit court both received an overall performance rating of good.

"Both of these audits identified opportunities to improve processes and procedures within government to better serve residents and citizens," Auditor Galloway said. "I urge the county and the court to implement these recommendations and focus their efforts on responsible use of taxpayer dollars."

The report found that the county has approximately $2.4 million in cash reserves, which is twice the total general operating expenses for 2016. There are no specific plans for the funding, but the county continues to assess the maximum property tax rate allowed by law. The audit recommends the county closely review funding needs and consider reducing property taxes for citizens.

The county audit also highlighted weaknesses in tracking and accounting for capital assets such as buildings, equipment and vehicles. County records of these items have not been updated for five years.

The circuit court audit identified a need for increased oversight and improved accounting procedures. The recommendations related to account adjustments, issuing receipts, and procedures to collect past due payments.
