Auditor Galloway releases audit of New Madrid County government

Audit identifies lack of oversight in several areas; county receives good rating

10/17/2017

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway released a regularly scheduled audit of New Madrid County, located in southeast Missouri. The audit, which received an overall rating of good, found several areas within county government where oversight could be improved.

"Checks and balances ensure taxpayer dollars are accounted for accurately and any misuse of funds is identified and addressed quickly," Auditor Galloway said. "New Madrid County officials have pledged to address these concerns, and I urge them to move forward in implementing improved processes and procedures."

The report identified the need for improved oversight within the property tax system, sheriff's office and prosecuting attorney's office. Recommendations include having a secondary review of financial transactions or making sure the same individual is not responsible for all financial activity.
