Auditor Galloway makes recommendations for improvement in Taney County Collector's Office

Audit initiated after vacancy in the office; Report recommends improved procedures for recording transactions and cybersecurity

05/30/2017

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway announced today that her office has completed an audit of the Taney County Collector's Office. The audit was performed per Missouri law, which requires an audit when a vacancy occurs in a county collector's office.

"An audit can serve as an important tool during a transition to highlight areas that need improvement and find ways to better the operations of the office," said Auditor Galloway. "The corrective action I'm recommending will help ensure potential errors or inappropriate activities are quickly detected and investigated."

The audit recommended better procedures for issuing receipts and depositing incoming payments. The audit also found the office had inadequate computer password features, which must be improved to reduce the risk of unauthorized access to county data.

Former County Collector Sheila Wyatt resigned after being elected to the Taney County Commission. Deputy Collector Ramona Cope was appointed to fill the vacancy and has begun efforts to address the concerns outlined in the report.

The Taney County Collector's Office audit report, which received an overall performance rating of good, is available online here
