Auditor Galloway launches audit of Washington County

Citizens encouraged to report information to the Whistleblower Hotline

07/03/2018

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (July 3, 2018) Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway recently announced that her office has started a regularly scheduled audit of Washington County, located in east central Missouri. The most recent audit of Washington County was completed in 2015, with the county receiving an overall performance rating of fair.

"My office is conducting an independent and comprehensive audit of Washington County to ensure taxpayer resources have been used appropriately, and we also will recommend improvements for the county to better serve its citizens," Auditor Galloway said. "Residents who have information that would be helpful to this audit are encouraged to contact us through my Whistleblower Hotline."

Among the findings of the 2015 audit were that the county had not solicited bids for purchasing more than $326,000 in items; that accounting controls and procedures in the offices of sheriff and county collector needed improvement; and that the prosecuting attorney did not keep an accurate listing of restitution accounts receivable. While the prior audit was taking place, the Washington County Public Administrator was facing felony charges for stealing and for abuse of person receiving health care. She subsequently pleaded guilty to those charges and resigned from the position.

Individuals may provide confidential information for consideration during the audit to the State Auditor's Whistleblower Hotline at 800-347-8597 or by email atmoaudit@auditor.mo.gov.
