Auditor Galloway launches audit of Montgomery County

'Fair' rating in 2012 reflected accounting control issues, outdated property records

03/24/2016

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway today announced her office has begun a regularly scheduled audit of Montgomery County, located in central Missouri. The county's most recent audit was released in October 2012.

"We begin the audit process by looking at past audit findings to identify issues we've seen before, and we'll do the same in Montgomery County," Auditor Galloway said. "If we identify ongoing or new concerns, we make recommendations to help officials better serve citizens. I look forward to sharing our findings with the public."

The 2012 audit identified a number of concerns with the sheriff's accounting procedures, including having $1,825 in unidentified funds in two bank accounts. Auditors also determined that no independent review was conducted to verify the accuracy of the monthly or annual settlements prepared by the county collector. The county's capital asset procedures also needed significant improvement. Property records had not been updated for at least 10 years, and a physical inventory of assets had not been conducted for at least eight years. Auditors raised additional concerns about late settlements filed by the public administrator and noted that County Commission minutes did not always specify the reasons for holding closed sessions. Montgomery County received an overall performance rating of "fair" in 2012, and the complete audit report can be found online here.
