Auditor Galloway launches audit of McDonald County

County government received 'poor' rating in 2012 audit report

04/18/2016

Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway today announced that her office has begun a regularly scheduled audit of McDonald County, located in southwest Missouri. The county was audited most recently in December 2012. Because the county received an overall performance rating of "poor," the office issued a follow-up report in May 2013.

"Our team will conduct a thorough review of McDonald County's operations and procedures and, if necessary, offer recommendations for increased transparency and efficiency," Auditor Galloway said. "I look forward to sharing our findings with the county's residents."

In the 2012 report, auditors identified numerous concerning practices with the sheriff's accounting procedures, including dormant bank accounts that needed to be closed, insufficient documentation for some payments from a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) bank account, and inadequate procedures relating to seized property. The county also failed to solicit bids for major purchases as required by state law, and county collector miscalculations resulted in incorrect amounts being withheld from fire and school districts.

The complete 2012 audit is available online here.
