Auditor Galloway issues audit of Pulaski County, calls for increased oversight of accounting records

12/23/2015

State Auditor Nicole Galloway today issued an audit of Pulaski County. The report, which received an overall rating of "Fair," outlines a number of areas requiring additional oversight by county officials and includes several findings that have been reported in prior audits.

"Pulaski County officials have the opportunity to put into place safeguards to avoid the risk of loss or theft and to ensure county funds are being used efficiently," Galloway said. "We've made a number of recommendations in this report designed to help Pulaski county government be more accountable to its residents."

Auditors identified concerning practices in place in the sheriff's department, which collects money for a number of reasons, including fees and permits. The department failed to issue some receipt slips, did not deposit money timely, and turned over money to the wrong county fund. Auditors also raised concerns that the county did not compensate employees according to its overtime policy, and the county clerk and county commission did not provide oversight of the county collector's financial activities. The collector's work was not reviewed independently or tested to ensure that property tax money was collected accurately.
